Overall Personality: Matthew Scott is a young soldier looking to rise in rank within the American Airforce. Despite being a First Lieutenant; he can oftentimes be very questioning, especially of himself and his actions. He is a very polite young man who has been through many hardships and challenges in his life. Albeit, he doesn't allow these ghosts to affect his job aboard the Destiny, or his career for that matter, however there is the occasional moment of self-doubt. As young as he is for his current role in the situation regarding the mission, he can take and execute an order to the letter, most of the time without question. However, he shows signs of mental distress as he has been noted in his military file "mentally unprepared for leadership duty." Despite his strong production as a good, strong-willed, and mind-over-matter type of soldier, he is still young at heart and questions himself. He is a soldier first and tends to make the right decision despite his character flaw of always questioning and second guessing his nature. He is a skilled junior member of SGC, and is hungry to advance, despite notions of young immaturity. Despite all these things, Matthew Scott, is a great soldier, usually unafraid of the dangers that may lie ahead. His uses his faith to act a higher power to guide his hand to face the unimaginable terrors the unexplored galaxy might contain. Among all the hardships that he is had to face, he has somehow found a way to continue on, even though his mind is somewhat broken, he refuses to give up, and is as determined as any good soldier can possibly be. Matthew is a very able bodied human being and very strong willed, witnessing many things in his past that he would no sooner like to forget than continue to live with, he still finds ways to march ahead and get the job done. Oftentimes he will be without energy or motivation, in which he will turn to his God for answers. He can be seen muttering to himself more often than not in silent prayer. Perhaps asking his God to show him the way in dark times, which is almost always every day aboard the Destiny. He considers being on the Destiny, with these people and serving under Col. Young to be a great honor, despite the challenges of being on such a mission. He follows Young's order to the point and will not deter or sway from the execution or seeing it through to the end. He considers Young to be a father figure, a father that he has never had. In fact, he harbors a secret father-like-son love for the man, and would hate to fail him or the rest of the people aboard the ship. Despite his doubt in some of the current residents, he knows where his duties are, and what his job is, and would prefer to work as hard as he able to get these people safely home rather than see them fail. He is just that type of person. Always willing to help people even those he doesn't particularly like. As he sees it: they are all in this together, and everyone must pull their weight. Despite the dangers and stress being on this mission contains, the young man can always find a way to fight through his fear of the unknown. Despite these challenges, Matthew is a smart and logical soldier, calculated and calm in times of strong duress. For someone that has been through much, he has ways of fighting through immense pain, which in turn, he doesn't allow to affect his job. Sometimes it scares him to a point where he questions whether he is doing the right thing. However, he does not allow these times to travel to the outside and be visible to others. It is only the people that he holds close where he will allow himself to drop his guard and be truthful, oftentimes showing his childish nature and question his existence. On the other side of this coin, he believes that people uphold too much of him. He believes they expect too much and what scares him the most is whether he can see things through and show them that he is actually who they see him to be. His ghosts would say otherwise, as they seemingly hold him down. Matthew always tries to analyze a situation and determine the best outcome, weighing the best outcome with the absolute wrong one. This attitude is what makes him so well-liked among his peers, as he can calculate a situation and determine the best decision. It makes him a good soldier that his superiors oftentimes applaud him for his strength. He would give up everything to ensure the safety and survival of a fellow soldier. He believes that in order for the ship and the crew to survive, then the military personnel will need to work in unison with the civilian populace. He believes this shouldn't be a military governance and allow the civilians to have a say and vote. Should any one group of people have all the voice, then they will surely all perish. While he believes in fate, and a higher power, he doesn't want to see all their lives wasted and handed over to a deity, not if they can control their destiny. | |
History: The military is what Matthew has always known. His past is somewhat of a tragic car wreck, where the broken memories are shards of glass. However, his strong will as a human being to survive has seen him through all sorts of dark moments. His past was not kind to him, but he doesn't normally allow these feelings to uproot and take over. It is a hard fight. Despite his tragic childhood in which he has seen both his parents die in a violent car crash due to a drunk driver, he has been dealing with the pain of loss for his entire life. Never truly being able to get over his parents. He will allow his pain to overwhelm in some circumstances, but only a sign to show him that he is still alive. He blames himself for not being able to prevent their death, despite him only being four years old at the time. He doesn't know how to get over this hurdle and has tried for many years, instead choosing to push their memory to the back of his head. He was raised by a priest who loved Matthew like a son. But alcohol claimed his life when Matthew was 17. Despite the drink taking all the people that he ever loved away, Matthew had at one point wanted to a be a priest. Perhaps wanting to carry the memory of his adopted father and make him proud. But his future career had been questioned as he had begun to see a girl named Annie Balic. They had been introduced through friends and their relationship had started to become volatile. Despite the love that the both of them shared, they both wanted two separate things. She wanted a child, and he wanted to become a devout Christian. It was his way of telling her that he couldn't handle the prospect of being a father. He hated the idea, but he couldn't tell her in those words. They started to fall apart, and grow distant, seeing less and less of each other. It wasn't until that she had called him, telling him that she was pregnant. Matthew didn't know how to handle the news as this was the last thing he had wanted. She told him she wanted to abort the baby, but being the good-natured human, Matthew said that he wanted to be there. But the months of not calling or texting or talking had put a strain on their relationship and things were no longer the same. Even though Matthew loves his son with all his heart, he had begun to question his identity as a good Christian man. So he visited his father's church and sat in the row of pews for what felt like hours, searching for himself. He decided to enlist in the military, which would see him far away from the tragic history that lingered in his hometown, which brought him to Stargate Command, and a mission that would test all of himself and his belief. In bringing his Christianity with him he has seen himself through tried and troubling times. Now serving as a First Lieutenant he has developed a sort of loveless relationship with a fellow soldier. However, his feelings towards civilian Chloe Armstrong are somewhat of a different animal. |
